Abstract

International trade is vital to the economic well-being of the Atlantic Canadian fisheries. When properly regulated within sustainable ecological limits, trade creates opportunities for both fish harvesters and local communities. Unfortunately, the broad scope of new trade and investment treaties and the corporateled globalization they facilitate pose considerable threats to many aspects of fisheries regulation.
