Dulong fishing, targeting small, juvenile fish with fine-mesh nets, is widespread in the Verde Island Passage, Philippines. Despite legal prohibitions, it provides significant income for fishers and serves as a local delicacy. Studies revealed: Dulong catches consist mainly of post-larval and juvenile sardines and anchovies, potentially impacting future fish populations. The fishery involves at least 300 households and generates an estimated 573 tons annually in Batangas province alone. Confusion exists about the legality due to exemptions in the Fisheries Code and permits issued by local governments. Strict enforcement of the ban requires correcting misconceptions about dulong maturity and developing a clear policy for exempt species. This knowledge can inform sustainable management strategies for dulong fisheries while considering the needs of fishing communities.
