Abstract

Almost 40 per cent of the total world fisheries entering international trade are from capture fisheries and aquaculture. Due to declining catches in wirld fisheries, increasing attention is given to aquaculture to meet the demand. As regards market access for fisheries products, the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius are of particular importance. The EU is the world's largest market for fish. ACP fish exporters face challenges in maintaining access for their fishery products to the EU markets loss of ACP's competitive advantages due to market liberalisation under WTO; compliance with rules of origin to provide barrier for ACP fish exporting countries; compliance with EU standards like SPS measures, labelling and residue levels and heavy metals in fishery products; the quid pro quo that EU may demand in the new reciprocal arramgements after 2007.
