Abstract

Seaweed beds in coastal waters serve as spawning and rearing grounds for fish and shellfish. The recent reduction of seaweed beds, called “isoyake” in Japanese, has been considered as a cause of the recent decrease of some fishery resources in the coastal waters of Japan. In order to address such concerns, the fishers have undertaken various activities aimed at managing seaweed beds. Recognizing that conservation and rehabilitation of seaweed beds is an important policy issue, the Fisheries Agency of Japan has found it necessary to provide technical support to the efforts of the fishers by enhancing activities for the regeneration and conservation of seaweed beds, starting with the development and dissemination of the “Isoyake Recovery Guidelines (2007)”.
