Abstract

In talking about naval medicine in the Age of Exploration it is entirely fitting that Nicholas Baudin was born in 1754 on the Isle de Ré off La Rochelle, firstly because the time of his birth was the beginning of the great advances in the care of seamen, and secondly, because it was from the nearby Isle D’Oléron that Eleanor Duchess of Aquitaine brought to England its first maritime laws as far back as 1153.
