Abstract

A preliminary overview of marine and coastal-related policies and programs in Australia and Indonesia reveals several differences in their development and approaches to their formation. In order to give effect to national marine and coastal policies, there is a need for laws and administrative procedures which are ecologically-oriented and multi-disciplinary in approach. Both countries utilize sustainable principles in managing their marine and coastal resources by safeguarding the health of the ecosystem and maintaining bio-diversity, and providing a framework for using resources and space with a minimum of conflict. This article reviews how sustainable marine and coastal management was placed on the political agenda in Australia and Indonesia. It then provides a comparison of legal aspects in management of marine and coastal resources in Australia and Indonesia.
