This paper examines the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC)1 with respect to the exceptions to the right of transit passage through straits used for international navigation. The paper concludes that: (a) although the LOSC provides a special regime of passage through straits used for international navigation, there are still many straits which are under different regimes of passage; and (b) although the LOSC defines the exceptions to the right of transit passage, there are still some ambiguities in the relevant provisions of the LOSC which require clarification.
