Refugees make human rights an international issue. After shipwrecks claimed over 1000 lives in the Mediterranean Sea in April, a special EU summit decided to expand the funding of marine border control threefold, with a new focus on saving people from distress at sea. The EU also plans to fight people-smugglers and wants to cooperate more closely with the countries the refugees come from. Moreover, EU officers are to check in third countries whether a person may travel to Europe. Opinion pieces in many international newspapers dealt with the Mediterranean tragedy and the EU‘s response.
