Recession and suffer competition on the world markets are forcing Japanese enterprises, like those in other countries, to reduce costs, including labour costs. The Western press reported recently that Japan Airlines (JAL) plans to trim its staff by 20 per cent, to fewer than 20,000 by 1997. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Japan's largest company, has been quoted as saying that it will shrink its workforce by 30,000 over the next three years. The trend is similar for other Japanese companies in various sectors of the economy.
