Abstract

Intensive monoculture of giant tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon , was introduced in the Philippines in the 1980s. Its acceptance was spurred by the availability of hatchery reared postlarvae and artificial diets. Intensive systems, however, soon became plagued with infectious diseases, of which the most economically disastrous had bacterialetiologies. Many shrimp farmers have now reduced their culture runs.
