Abstract

The first half of the '80s was exciting for AQD. Breakthroughs were achieved and four Chiefs were appointed within five years. Highly influenced by a 20-year scenario in world fisheries and aquaculture, AQD consolidated and focused its research activities from commodity-oriented research programs to three aquaculture systems, namely: mariculture, brackishwater culture and freshwater culture. This new research thrust gave primary consideration to the effect of aquaculture on the environment and the sustainability of production.
