Over a vast region of the tropics, the shallow inshore waters are dominated by the formation of coral reefs and indeed, they are used to define the limits of the tropical marine environment. Coral reefs are one of the most productive ecosystems in the world. They are characterised by complex associations of plants and animal communities, rapid and efficient cycling of nutrients. In a way, they are an oasis in the nutrient deficient expanse of the warm tropical seas.
