Due to white spot virus that affects the shrimp farming, many shrimp farmers in Ecuador are turning to tilapia farming. Inactive shrimp ponds with a water salinity of 15 ppm are being utilized for culture of Ecuadorian red tilapia, a hybrid that can thrive both in fresh and saline water.
