Abstract
Hilsa shad (Tenualosa ilisha) is the largest single-species capture fishery of Bangladesh. Seasonal distribution of this fish varies between the Bay of Bengal, Padma-Meghna-Brahmaputra estuary and upstream of these river systems. As a result, together with providing important food fish, Hilsa has become part of life and livelihood for many people in this country even since before pre-colonial history.
