The College of the Marshall Islands (CMI) initiated construction of a multi-disciplinary research station in January 2001, marking the embryonic phase of their research programme in aquaculture and stock enhancement. Like many Indo-Pacific nations, the Marshall Islands has been dealing with foreign interests in the exploitation of their holothurian resources and there is imminent danger of local over-exploitation of the most valuable species.
