Abstract
Over a few decades, Indian freshwater aquaculture has evolved from being a domestic activity in the eastern Indian $tates of West Bengal and Orissa, to an industry Fish culture was normally done in ponds without replenishing the water, and production levels of 8 to '0 tons per ha per year were achieved by farmers, using need-based modifications in their practices_ Further imcnsivc fish culture was done, using aeration and with an additional input, pelletred feed. This led to production levels of as much as 15 tons per ha per year achieved in pond culture.
