Abstract

Saturday, 9 September 2006, was to have been a big fiesta day in Mehuin, a coastal town in southern Chile, home to a small fishing community of approximately 1,700 people. However, poor weather conditions put paid to that plan. Instead, the Mehuín Union of Women Workers was forced to limit its cultural events to a small gathering in the offices of the fishermen’s union.
