Abstract

Fishing has a long history in Thailand which is one of the top fish producing nations of the world. Thailand has a coastline of nearly 2600 km, with an exclusive economic zone of nearly 316,000 km2 both in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea. There are 23 coastal provinces, of which seventeen border the Gulf of Thailand (east coast), and six are along the Andaman Sea (west coast). Fishing has been part of people’s lifestyle, especially in the coastal provinces. The six provinces of the west coast are Ranong, Phang-Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun. The west coast (Andaman Sea) has a number of mangrove forests and sea grass meadows, making it a suitable habitat for dugongs.
