UN Members will approve the goals in September 2015 after further deliberations. The SDGs will succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) when they expire in 2015. Like the MDGs, the SDGs have no sanctioning mechanism with which to enforce them. But like the MDGs, they will establish a UN procedure whereby national efforts are publicly compared and discussed, countries are subjected to a “beauty contest”, and more action is called for. The SDGs cover the most important social indicators defined by the UN for the purposes of the Rio+20 Conference in 2012, namely nutrition, access to water, health, education, energy, work, income, social justice, gender justice, participation, as well as resilience.
