Abstract

There are 40 communities of indigenous peoples living in Russia who are labelled under Russian law as “Indigenous smallnumbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation”. This is a collective term for peoples with a population of fewer than 50,000 each, who inhabit two-thirds of the Russian territory in the Arctic and Asian parts of the country.
