Abstract

At the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002, a group of South African small-scale fisher people gathered to discuss fishing policy. While at that time the political impact of this gathering in Johannesburg was minimal—if any at all—it was a crucial gathering in that it triggered an unprecedented civil society process to address small-scale fishing in South Africa.
