Abstract

The project “Implementing the Small-Scale Fisheries Guidelines for gender equitable and climate-resilient food systems and livelihoods” (FMM/GLO/155/MUL) promotes the application of the principles of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (hereafter, the SSF Guidelines) with special attention to the role of women, gender equality, the post-harvest sector and sustainable food systems. The project started in June 2021 and is a follow-up to an earlier project funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, which, through an amendment to the original project document (GCPGLO/645/NOR), focused on empowering women in fisheries for sustainable food systems. In this earlier project, activities were started in Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania, but have also been expanded to Indonesia, Madagascar, Namibia and the Philippines since 2021, with funding continued under the FAO Flexible Multi-partner Mechanism (FMM). In addition to country-level initiatives, the project also supports sharing of lessons learned and good practices, and strengthening of institutional structures at the regional and global levels. The current project runs until December 2023, which includes a no-cost extension of its initial duration as delays were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. With travel restrictions lifted, it was considered important to organize a meeting for project countries and partners to take stock of and exchange on experiences gained thus far, and to discuss priorities for the remaining time of the project. Accordingly, a four-day workshop was organized in Accra, Ghana, from 6 to 9 June 2022. This report documents the proceedings of this workshop.
