This issue brief aims to highlight the benefits of adopting the gender transformative approach (GTA) in small-scale fisheries (SSF) projects and initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa. The brief serves as an introduction for various stakeholders wishing to gain an initial understanding of how to embed the GTA in fisheries’ programming. The adoption of the GTA in SSF-related initiatives in sub Saharan Africa supports efforts to examine, challenge and change the underlying causes of gender inequality. Integrating the GTA in SSF is in line with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) overarching goals to enhance agriculture productivity and boost sustainable livelihoods as well as food security for all women and men, through the promotion of gender equality and social justice.
