Abstract

The fishing community in the Gulf of Mannar (GOM), in the southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu, has been at odds with the government over access to marine resources after the declaration of about 560 sq km as the Gulf of Mannar (Marine) National Park in 1986 under the Wildlife Protection Act (WLPA) of 1972. As a result, entry into the National Park and use of any natural resource from the area is prohibited.
