Despite being considered a middle-income country, South Africa is plagued by high levels of poverty, unemployment, and inequality. Currently, its economic trajectory looks bleak in the midst of what can be referred to as a ‘poly-crisis’, which includes a weakened economy exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and a long-standing electricity crisis (Stoddard 2023). This has profound socio-economic implications for the everyday lives of many South Africans who bear the brunt of this crisis. In this context, people living in rural areas, especially women and children, are considered to be of the most vulnerable to its effects (STATS SA 2017; Cheteni et al. 2019). However, this time of uncertainty and a deepening socio-economic and environmental crisis presents an opportunity to critically look at the many facets that inform this crisis, as well as consideration (and re-consideration) of solutions informed by voices from the ground, as part of a bottom-up process to development deliberation and decisionmaking.
