Abstract

Based in Ocean View, South Africa, Charmaine Daniels was introduced to fishing in the late 1980s by her then boyfriend, who is now her husband. She started off as a recreational fisher, but by the year 2000, Charmaine became a fulltime fisher with an interim permit for westcoast rock lobster and snoek. At the same time, she also became involved in activism for Small-scale fishing rights and through, the non-governmental organization, the Masifundise Trust, she became involved in the 2006 Equality Court initiative for the establishment of a fishing rights policy.
