Abstract

Coastal and inland wetlands are undergoing a severe degradation in Brazil basically due to the construction of large harbours, chemical and petrochemical industries, highly intensive agricultural schemes, urban expansion and overfishing [1]. These degradation processes are not only affecting natural ecosystems and their renewable resources but also disorganizing the traditional way of life of small-scale fishermen. In order to control the effects of environmental degradation, the Government relies on environmental laws and regulations, mainly the establishment of protected areas and the application of environmental impact analysis.
