Abstract

Dynamite fishing causes serious problems, harming coral reefs, reducing fish numbers, impacting coastal communities and small fisheries, and hurting tourism. The Langa Langa Lagoon in the Solomon Islands is known for making traditional shell money, which is important for local customs like weddings and resolving conflicts. But illegal dynamite fishing now threatens the lagoon's significance. This harmful practice has damaged once-thriving reefs, turning them into lifeless underwater areas. Jeremy Gwao talks with villagers in the Langa Langa Lagoon in the first of a three-part series on dynamite fishing.
