Abstract

All governments across Australia – Australian, state, territory and local – play a leadership role in regulating, funding, undertaking and facilitating nature conservation. Australia’s Strategy for Nature brings together existing work across the country and guides the development of new and innovative approaches to implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework. It focuses on overarching goals that support healthy and functioning biological systems by promoting a stronger connection between people and nature, improving the way we value and care for nature, and building and sharing knowledge. This strategy establishes national targets in 6 priority areas of the Global Biodiversity Framework that are most relevant to addressing the key drivers of biodiversity decline in Australia between now and 2030. The strategy also identifies 3 ‘enablers of change’, which are methods that support us to achieve transformational change and deliver results that meet the targets. Focusing on these enablers recognises the broader efforts required to support Australia’s capability to protect our biodiversity. The Strategy for Nature is a shared roadmap to better understand, care for and sustainably manage nature. Its implementation at the national level will be tracked and measured by the Australian Government, including Environment Information Australia, through the development of key performance indicators and methods for measuring Australia’s overall progress towards meeting our commitments.
