Abstract

Industrial aquaculture: better production, better nutrition, better environment, and better life? has been developed in close collaboration with fisher peoples and coastal communities from ten countries across four regions: Latin America (Brazil, Chile, Colombia), North America (Canada, United States), Africa (The Gambia, Senegal), and Asia Pacific (Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand). It draws upon participatory action research conducted with affected communities between 2025 and 2026, including interviews, community meetings, and exchanges with researchers and research institutions, in addition to past testimonies, reports, comments, and articles. It reflects a collective effort involving fisher peoples’ organisations, social movements, Indigenous Peoples, researchers, and civil society organisations across the globe. This report grounds its analysis in the lived experiences of fishing communities, challenging the FAO’s Blue Transformation agenda with evidence from those whose territories and livelihoods have been destroyed by the expansion of industrial aquaculture.
