Abstract
The term "biological diversity" is used to describe the number and variety of living organisms on the planet. It is defined in terms of genes, species and ecosystems which are the outcome of over 3,000 million years of evolution. Indeed more than 40 per cent of the world economy and 80 per cent of the needs of the poor in the world are derived from biological diversity.
