Abstract

China is changing and it is happening now. The economy is booming, expanding at a rate of 15 to 20 per cent a year. Beijing is developing fast, with demolition and earthwork everywhere, great ring roads being built to ease the snarl of congested traffic. It is estimated that in the past three years, the number of cars has increased fivefold, while the number of cycles has halved. About half the traffic I saw in Beijing seemed to be little yellow taxis—a wonderfully cheap and flexible supplement to the public transport system of buses and subways.
