Abstract

This describes the struggle of traditional fishermen in India. Unbalanced fisheries development has been usurped by an export-oriented industry. This has led to the impoverishment of the coastal poor and destruction of the marine ecosystem. Total fish catches have declined since the introduction of capital-intensive mechanised techniques. This dossier documents dimensions of the problem, the struggle and its prospects.
