Abstract

This paper examines the case of common property resource--the coastal sea eco-system and the fish therein. It highlights how a combination of economic, technological and social factors interacting in a specific context results in overuse of the common, leading to its near ruin. This paper provides a brief history of the fishery development in Kerala, it also enumerates the various factors leading to the overuse, and ultimately to overfishing, evidence of overfishing and assesses the impact of overfishing.
