Abstract

Lake Victoria, whose waters are shared by three countries, namely, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, supports Africa’s largest inland fishery. Its most valuable products are Nile perch, dagaa and tilapia. The Lake Victoria fishery has come under increasing pressure in the last two decades as fish stocks have declined steadily since production peaked in the early 1990s. However, the demand for Nile perch in Europe, America and Asia, and for dagaa in regional and domestic markets, continues to grow.
