Abstract

Poverty drove the coastal fishing villages in Thailand to resort to destructive fishing methods and rampant clearing of mangroves. A small development organisation worked with these villagers, through education, to protect their mangrove forests thereby triggering a regeneration of their society, economy and fishery.
