Emploment of women in the shrimp industry is preferred as it is cheaper than male labour. Women are employed in this sector as they have better skills in peeling the shrimp, making the shrimp headless and packing them in specially designed containers. All works of this nature are casual and there is no certainty of getting work daily. This case study shows that although employment of women in the shrimp processing industry has hepled augment family income, it has not happened without a cost. Their regular, periodic absence from the family has widespread implications on the well-being of the family, especially children. Apart from the this, work and living conditions of these migrant workers are very poor and unsatisfactory.
