This article examines the tensions between a governance process that integrates participatory democracy with the generation of knowledge on the processes of ecosystem change. The ecosystem includes ecological, economic and institutional components. Recommendations are made for how the linkages between governance process and knowledge on ecosystems function and change might be strengthened.
