This report highlights that new fisheries law was formulated by the Government of Indonesia to accommodate the current needs of and respond to the challenges of the fishing industry. Most of the provisions of this law are geared toward the maximum utilization of fishery resources for the economic benefit of the people and the state while maintaining the sustainability of fisheries resources and its environment. By enacting the new fisheries law, Indonesia not only meets its international obligations in the management and conservation of fisheries but also in preventing, deterring and eliminating IUU fishing. However, there is still a need for Indonesia to formulate additional measures to effectively combat IUU fishing conducted within and outside its jurisdiction. It is also necessary to harmonize and revise existing laws, as well as enact new laws and regulations to address gaps in fisheries management.
