Abstract

The post-war period in Sri Lanka was characterized by rapid rates of growth of population that exerted tremendous pressure on food supplies. In order to face the new challenges, the State, which assumed a regulatory role during the pre-war period, took an active role—one of reformism—to expand fish production. Many technological innovations have been introduced to fisheries since then, with major emphasis on mechanization.
