Abstract

On 13 October 2008, at Bangkok, Thailand, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) opened its first conference dedicated to smallscale fisheries. Titled “Securing Sustainability in Small-scale Fisheries” (4SSF), the conference was a long time in the making. Prior to its opening, at the end of a Civil Society Preparatory Workshop, representatives of smallscale fishers from over 30 countries signed a Statement listing their concerns on a wide variety of topics, including ecolabelling.
