Abstract
Five of the seven species of marine turtles occur in India, with the exceptions of Kemp's ridley and flatback turtles. All five species are protected under India's Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and under the several international treaties to which India is a party. Of particular concern in India is the mortality of olive ridley sea turtles, the main cause of which is believed to be from shrimp trawl operations.
