This paper attempts to discuss the impact of WTO-GATS on the marine trade and service industry, analyse the challenges faced by the developing countries and suggests ways to respond to them. Many other WTO-GATS related aspects have repercussions on marine exports from developing countries in Asia and especially India; the outcomes from dispute settlement mechanism, the relation between trade rules and multilateral environmental agreements, technical assistance and capacity building and the provisions for special and differential treatment. The impact of GATS and the implications on Indian marine trade and services are specifically assessed in the context of tariff barriers, non tariff barriers, subsidies and ecolabelling.
